Art Van Will Unveil New Parade Float

November 24, 2009
Art Van Furniture will introduce a new float for the annual Michigan Thanksgiving Day parade.

The float, "Knights of the Chairtable Round Table," includes a 12-foot Tiffany style working lamp and a 7-foot boy riding an animated 10-foot-long hobby horse. It was designed by Jimmie Thompson and built by volunteer, including nine grandchildren of company founder Art Van Elslander.

Van Elslander is a grand marshal of this year's parade along with Paul W. Smith of a local radio station. Fifty Art Van employees, dressed as knights and dragons, will be accompanying the float along the parade route. The new float joins Art Van Furniture's legendary "Flicker", a dragon balloon.

The new float marks Art Van's 50th year in business and its tradition of giving throughout Michigan. The retailer has had a year-long celebration marking its anniversary.
Other celebrations this year have included:

"I believe it is our responsibility to give back, when you're fortunate to be as successful as we've been for five decades," Van Elslander said. "The Parade is always a highlight of the year for our community, our company and my family. It is an honor to once again be part of this important Michigan event."
