Kindel Lays Off 24, Trims Work Week
January 7, 2009
High-end furniture manufacturer Kindel Furniture Co., Grand Rapids, Mich., layed off 19 full-time workers and five part-time workers and switched to a four-day work week for its remaining employees, the Grand Rapids Press reported Monday.
President Jonathan Smith said in the report that while 2008 sales rose slightly from 2007, orders slowed toward the end of the year.
"The order volume since October has flattened off somewhat," he said. "It's much easier for us to go for a four-day work week, with a pretty standard staff, then go back to five-days, rather than lay off more people now and needing to hire more later."
In December, Kindel consolidated its warehouse into its Grand Rapids plant. The company still employees over 100 people.
