Klaussner to Shutter California Factory

August 21, 2009
Klaussner Home Furnishings plans to close its manufacturing operations in La Mirada, Calif., effective Oct. 19. The closing will impact 84 employees.

“While our import upholstery and case goods business on the West Coast continues to grow, demand for our domestic upholstery products produced there just wasn’t at an adequate level to operate the facility profitability,” said J.B. Davis, president and CEO of Klaussner Home Furnishings. “This move will allow us to reduce our overall production costs, which will enable us to improve our competitiveness.”

Klaussner will maintain its West Coast sales force to support its upholstery and case goods business there. Dealers who received upholstery products manufactured at the California facility will still be able to receive domestic upholstery products from the company's Iowa and North Carolina service centers.

Klaussner first began operating in California in May 1984 in a Sun Valley, Calif., facility. The following year, the company  moved to a larger facility in Mentone, Calif. In 2000, Klaussner acquired Golden Oaks Furniture of La Mirada, and the Mentone operation was consolidated into the 175,000-square-foot La Mirada facility in 2006.

“This is certainly not a reflection on our employees there as they have worked very hard and have played an important role in Klaussner’s overall success over the years,” Davis said. “We appreciate their commitment and are saddened to have to close this facility.”

The company said it remains committed to domestic upholstery manufacturing at its other operations located in North Carolina and Iowa. The company also maintains a case goods warehouse in North Carolina.
