Vancouver's Koplan's to Close

April 9, 2009

Koplan's Home Furnishings, Vancouver, Washington, closed after business Tuesday, The Columbian (Clark County, Wash.) reported on Wednesday.

A going-out-of-business sale will begin April 17 and run no more than 60 days.

A tough economy and the prospect of retirement led to the decision to close the half-century-old business.

"I didn't plan on this happening, just now," Owner Keith Koplan told the paper. "But we've been operating in the red for two years, and we had to weigh that against our plans to retire. I had to ask myself how long it would take to make up for the losses we've been seeing. If I were 10 years younger, I could hang in there."

Koplan's parents, Al and Vel Koplan, started the business with a focus on upscale looks at middle price points.

"Our customers have been Nordstrom customers … those looking for value at a good price," Koplan said. "That has been our customer profile for years."
