Second Pilgrim Arriving In Connecticut
Pilgrim Furniture City Readying 80,000-Square-Foot Location For March Opening
January 2008
Pilgrim Furniture City, Southington, Conn., announced recently that it will open its second location as early as March. The 80,000-square-foot store is on a busy highway across from a Costco in Milford, and it will feature a carousel in its entry area and incorporate a number of energy-saving features.
Pilgrim, the NHFA Retailer of the Year in 2006, will spend $5 million on the store. The store’s owners, Mike Albert and Steve Bichunsky, have expanded the company’s existing store several times since 2001, and it now has a 90,000-square-foot showroom with unique features that include a 6,000-square-foot show house inside the building.
In an announcement, Albert said Pilgrim is working with the state for a grant to use solar panels. The design incorporates a highly energy-efficient heating and cooling system and will use 12-foot clerestory windows in the roof to enable the store to reduce electrical lighting. The Connie Post Companies is collaborating on the design. “It will be 65 percent open space, which is a very flexible way to creatively display furniture,” Albert said. “We will have two revolving platforms as you enter the showroom to display our best sellers and new fashion trends for (the) home.”
The store will also bring have a “Cans’ Cafe,” a popular feature of the Southington store. It serves coffee, desserts, hot dogs and snacks aimed at “keeping kids happy.”
