Wisconsin Independent to Close
June 18, 2009Schauer & Schumacher, a 104-year-old furniture store in Ashwaubenon, Wis., will close by mid-July, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported on Thursday.
"It's the economic conditions," said Curt Saari, Schauer & Schumacher's secretary-treasurer in the report. "We still have people buying, but not enough people are buying. Carrying that overhead in the store was just too much for us."
Sales began slowing at the store last summer, and a spring sale to raise cash wasn't enough to keep the store going.
The store, which employs 13 people, relocated from downtown Green Bay to Ashwaubenon in 2001.
