Researchers Link New Mattresses With Health Benefits

University Researchers Find That New Mattresses Provide Better Sleep, Less Stiffness, Lower Degree of Back Pain

March 2008
University study participants said new mattresses provided better sleep quality, reduced back pain and less stiffness compared to their old mattress (which were five years or older), according to a research from Oklahoma State University that will be published in the “Journal of Applied Ergonomics” this month.

“Our work showed that new mattresses have a considerable impact on reduced back pain and improved sleep quality, among other benefits,” said Bert Jacobson, lead researcher at Oklahoma State University. “Based on our research, there’s no question that a new mattress can sustain these benefits for just about anyone, regardless of age, weight or gender.”

According to a news release by the International Sleep Products Association, study participants reported reduced back pain (62.8 percent), shoulder pain (62.4 percent), and back stiffness (58.4 percent), as well as improved sleep quality (64.4 percent) and sleep comfort (69.96 percent).

The study is a fresh analysis of work published by the “Journal of Chiropractic Medicine” in 2006. Conclusions are based on findings from a control group of 59 healthy participants who contrasted their sleep on their own mattresses (which were at least five years old) with a new bedding system.
