Smith & Hawken Going Out of Business
July 10, 2009Upscale garden and outdoor furniture retailer Smith & Hawken will close its 55 stores and liquidate the business by the end of the year, according to an Associated Press report Thursday.
The chain is owned by Ohio-based Scotts Miracle-Gro Co.
Founder Paul Hawken said in the report that Scotts made changes, including outdoor living merchandise, that moved the chain away from its original focus on high-end English gardening equipment.
Scotts wanted to sell Smith and Hawken, but could not find a buyer. A notice on Smith & Hawken's Web site said the company is no longer accepting online orders.
