La-Z-Boy Inc., Monroe, Mich., reported on Tuesday that its second-quarter fiscal 2009 sales fell 9.2 percent from the same period last year to $331.9 million. In response to slumping sales, La-Z-Boy, Monroe, Mich., announced a series of cost-cutting moves Thursday that include cutting 850 jobs, shutting 15 to 20 La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores and trimming 2009 capital expenditures by as much as $9 million. California La-Z-Boy Stores Opening in Chico, Redding

Jim Reego and Liz Reego, who own four La-Z-Boy stores in California, are scheduled to open new locations in Chico and Redding this Friday, according to a report in the Sacramento Business Journal. The new stores are former La-Z-Boy stores that had been operated by McMahan’s Furniture, which decided to close all operations earlier this year. In addition to the new stores, the report said the Reegos are thinking of expanding to Vacaville; relocating a store from Folsom to Rancho Cordova; and remodeling their store in Roseville.

A group of eight La-Z-Boy stores in the Southeast were able to deliver 11 tractor-trailer loads of gently used furniture to charitable groups through a Semi-Annual Trade-In Sale that begins again Wednesday. The La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores that are offering discounts of up to $250 for donations of used furniture in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia are operated by Tipperary Sales, Augusta, Ga. La-Z-Boy reported net sales for the first quarter ended July 26 of $322 million, a 6.6 percent decrease from the $344 million posted in the same quarter of last year. The company also reported a net loss from continuing operations of $8.5 million for the quarter, compared to a $8.5 million loss during the same period last year.
