A Rowe Furniture spokesman confirmed a newspaper report Friday that the company has sold two properties, including its Elliston, Va., factory, as part of a lease-back arrangement with the property’s new owner, NL Ventures. “It’s just a sale of the land and the physical structure,” said Spokesman Saverio Mancina. The Roanoke Times report Friday said the company’s Salem, Va., frame shop was included in the sale. The company employs 689 people in Ellison and another 105 in Salem. The move solidifies Salem Frame’s position as a one-stop, full-service lumber drying and grading facility. Lumber from around the country arrives at Salem Frame for final preparation before being packaged and shipped around the world. Final preparation includes kiln drying, grading, trimming, ripping and packaging. Upholstered furniture manufacturer Clayton Marcus will close plants in Hickory and Bethelem, N.C., and switch production to a Rowe Furniture plant in Elliston, Va., according to a Charlotte (N.C.) Observer report. Rowe, Mclean, Va., had acquired Clayton Marcus from La-Z-Boy Inc. last October. The move, which should take place later this year or next year, should take advantage of the Virginia plant’s better technology. The Clayton Marcus plants have 232 workers. Rowe said in a release that it hopes some of Clayton Marcus’ employees might relocate to Elliston.

With a bankruptcy auction looming, management at Rowe Cos. has asked a Bankruptcy Court judge for more time to develop a plan to repay creditors. In a Dec. 29 filing at the federal court in Alexandria, Va., officials said the company has been focused on closings of its Storehouse retail stores and other matters, according to an Associated Press report released Wednesday. The company requested a four-month extension that would give it until May 13 to file its Chapter 11 plan. “In the few months since these cases were filed, the debtors have not had an opportunity to formulate a Chapter 11
